My website had occassion recently to be picked over by some pros. There were some things that I was proud of, but
mostly it was just me gritting my teeth and thinking “don't look at that!”. Oh well. Whatever comes of that inquiry, they've
given me some food for thought.
Server issues:
- It doesn't look like I'll be taking over DNS for idlespeculation.com, since Kory
used a provider that does its own DNS. At least it maps to the right place.
- I have no idea if Kory will ever get implication.com fixed, but I'm set to dost the DNS
for that. Any time now.
- I've taken over hosting http://www.rallymn.com, but I'm doing it in a sneaky manner.
Instead of hosting the DNS, I just put the index page on the server that is officially hosting www.rallymn.com, and pointing
the frames at my server.
- I'm starting to get irritated at the sloth of the Cyrix P150+ that is running the linux box. I have a P200 that is sittle
idle, so I'm thinking that it's time for a boost.
- This isn't really a server issue, but I inherited a flaky new windows box. Sure the specs look good (AMD K6-2 450 w/96M
RAM), but the previous owner had major crashing problems. Me too. I got it running in a somewhat stable manner and then
decided to change the bus speed and clock multiplier. Instead of running at 100X4.5, I'm running at 112X4. The processor
isn't going any faster, but the front side bus is begging to take a break (which it does without intervention by me). There
are some BIOS settings that I haven't monkeyed with yet, so we'll see what I end up with.

I haven't done much with the server in the last couple of weeks. I've been fiddling with mysql and cgi some. The results
can be seen in my cars application, which isn't much more than a practice query. I've also been
fiddling with some other things (now that the mysql permissions are sorted out), but nothing important…
Server issues:
- Still have to take over DNS service for idlespeculation.com and implication.com
- I've taken over hosting http://www.rallymn.com,
but I'm doing it in a sneaky manner.
- I've got to remember to have the server boot into text mode instead of X-windows. It might save some precious, precious
RAM, not that I've noticed any real performance issues.

Kory (the other sysop) will help me sort those out eventually, as soon as I can get a hold of him long enough to explain what's going on.

- There are many links that broke when Stan's files were moved over from the windows box. I've been going through and fixing them for him (because he probably never will). This is the importance of relative links and case sensitivity training…
smbmount works if you do it right. Heh heh.

DBI and mysql have been properly installed. Now I just have to learn
how to use them. :)
Somehow Postfix and sendmail were both installed and running
simultaneously. I deinstalled postfix- not knowing that sendmail was also
trying to handle the mail duties, and voila, the linux box is receiving
emails like a champ.
The server side includes on this page have slowed it down some, but
they're just so much fun…

Okay, yes, the linux box is running, and the apache web server seems to be running flawlessly, there are a few niggling details that still have yet to be worked out. Although mySQL is running, DBI and DBD have not been installed for perl. What the crap? Is this why we installed linux mandrake? It seems like if a person selects the “everything” option it should install something as vastly useful as DBI and DBD. I realise that not evceryone will be using them, but c'mon, that's why you go through and weed out the things that you don't need.
Oh well, at least sendmail is working, right? Wrong. Instead of installing sendmail or qmail, postfix was installed. Now, postfix might be great mail software, but was doesn't it show up in linuxconf? Instead, linuxconf references sendmail and appears to edit the sendmail files. Why isn't mandrake more intelligent?
Samba at least installed correctly the second time and runs pretty smoothly. However, I can't get smbmount to work. I want to be able to get the files off of my windows box. Ack! How am I supposed to make a smooth transition to linux if my old files are a mile away. Why should I ftp?
All bitching aside, the linux box is pretty sweet, despite running on a Cyrix P150+ circa 1996. The web serving is much faster than on my windows box, where I was running Omnihttpd. The windows box is a Pentium 200 running win98. Ack. At least the linux box hasn't randomly eaten itself. Just when I had the linux box installed for the first time, the windows box decided that it wanted nothing to do with TCP/IP anymore. A whole day of reinstalling later it was all okay again.
I now have two useful computers in my apartment- a true lesson in frugal computing. However, neither one is really doing what I want them to do, but at least it seems like I can make progress with the linux box. Ah, the trials and tribulations of personal computing.
Thank you for your patience and support.
